Beautiful image, no? As I get ready to move to San Francisco, I'm filing away little ideas to get a head start on dealing with the reality that I probably will not have the giant closets that Santa Barbara apartments have spoiled me with.

The styling here is lovely, and suggests that if your luggage and footwear are beautiful, and you don't have a lot of closet space, why not just display them nicely?

If you style your belongings that belong in the closet as though your apartment were a store, artfully arranging pieces, mixing clothing items in with other kinds of things, and keeping it all very tidy, I think you can get away with it.

At least, I think this looks a lot more appealing than those plastic Bed, Bath, & Beyond storage numbers that are best suited for a dorm room. (I'm not going to go on a rant here about B,B,&B b/c they do have many useful things, but the overwhelming masses of plaaastic (frosted plastic! pastel plastic! hot pink plastic!) in the place makes my skin crawl.)

LOVE the shoes all lined up in this pretty glass-front cabinet above, and the image below shoes a similar idea. Why not use normal furniture as shoe/bag/jewelry storage?

Speaking of which, what ever happened to a good old-fashioned armoire for storing hanging clothes?

In addition to just shoes, bags, and jewelry, Jenna Lyons shows us that you can store clothes in plain sight with a basic garment rack...

Now, this is a little unfair considering the goals of this post because a) it belongs to Jenna Lyons and she might actually be an alchemist, and more importantly, b) this isn't a case of clothes stored in plain sight due to space restrictions, as in, they're-in-her-bedroom-because-her-closet-is-too-small, this IS her closet ("dressing room").

However, I still submit this for your consideration, because you can just pretend this is in her bedroom, and you realize it would be very simple to pull off this look. The only thing that gets too unruly here are the shoes, and luckily, I don't have a pair of heels in every color of the rainbow plus animal prints, so I probably won't have to worry about shoes overtaking my room like this.

Another lovely garment rack example. Just keep it tidy and it looks fine.

Like Jenna's dressing room, this is not actually an example of someone storing their clothes in their room because their closet is too small, this is actually the Billy Reid store in Florence, Alabama. But it's still great inspiration for what styling can do!

Moral of the story, I think if you have to store clothes in your room, you should just pretend your room is a boutique and that you're trying to make the merchandise look as appealing as possible!

This stopped me in my tracks. And made my heart pound.

The first single, "Rolling in the Deep," off Adele's new album, to be released in January.

The seductively hazy, moody, leaves-you-wanting-more docu-style video was put together from studio footage from the recording sessions in Malibu, and the authentic style is perfectly suited to the soulful song, which she describes as "a dark, bluesy, gospel disco tune." I almost don't want there to be an official music video, I like this one!

For her second album, she paired up with big-time producers like Rick Rubin and Paul Epworth (Florence and the Machine, Cee-Lo, Phoenix), but don't let that fool you into thinking that maybe her personal style gets eclipsed by the visions of producers. If this single is any indication, it is actually quite the opposite-- Rubin and Epworth brilliantly capture the power of her voice and pair it with instrumentals just as dynamic and bold as her vocals.

This is not the Adele you know from her previous radio hits. Check it out.

New Yorkers, you know how the 6 train ends at Brooklyn Bridge, and they say "Last stop, Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall"? Well that stop is really only Brooklyn Bridge, and is not the original City Hall stop, and the original City Hall stop is actually this beautiful, magical place you see above, by far the most beautiful New York subway station ever made.

But the City Hall station was closed decades ago, for reasons you can read about here, never to be seen by passengers again...

UNLESS.

If you stay on the 6 train after they say last stop at Brooklyn Bridge (which you ordinarily would never do, because if for some reason you did want to just head right back up town, you would cross the platform to the uptown side), the 6 has to pass through the City Hall station to turn around and head back uptown! So if you just stay on for a few extra minutes, you can see the lost station!

How cool is that??? I feel like a little kid. I'm dying to do it.

I am totally enamored with Jacques Henri Lartigue and his work. Born in 1894, he received a camera for his seventh birthday, and from then on essentially kept a photo diary of his life. Fascinated by the things most young boys are interested in, including cars, dogs, his family and friends at play, aircraft, many of his most famous photographs were taken during his childhood.

As he continued to document his surroundings and outings for his entire life, he later took many photos of fashionable Parisian life and French vacation spots, but I'll save that era for another day.

Today, I'm loving the joie de vivre, humor, and idiosyncrasies captured in his childhood photographs.

Can you believe his technical capability at such a young age? This was before digital made everything look good, y'all.

I love these RSAnimate films. I can't get enough. I think I could watch these and TED talks all day long. Speaking of changing education paradigms, maybe there could be degree programs based entirely on educating oneself through these lectures? We might as well be learning from the experts at the tops of their respective fields, right?

Anyway, have you heard of "divergent thinking"? It basically means thinking outside the box-- creative problem solving. So this test was developed to measure people's abilities in "divergent thinking," and when the test was administered to kindergartners, guess how many qualified as what the test considered "genius level"? 98%. Ninety-eight percent! And guess how many qualified as genius level after five, and then ten years of education? Watch and find out...

It's one of many fascinating things explained in this eleven minute discussion of why the metrics that our education system is based on are setting our schools up for failure.

I do love a good collaboration, especially in the form of duets, and Isobel Campbell, of Belle and Sebastian, and Mark Lanegan, of Screaming Trees, serve up something wonderful on their album Hawk. And don't let their past work throw you off-track-- you'd be hard-pressed to find echoes of Belle and Sebastian or Screaming Trees here.

If you liked Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris's album, I'm willing to bet you'll like this one. Despite Campbell's Scottish background, the album sounds purely American, seamlessly melding blues, country, soul, folk, and rock. The unlikely pairing of their voices, hers floating, light, and airy and his gravelly, deep, and steady, has an alluring, addictive magic to it.

In fact, I am quite addicted to the song above. If it weren't for their unconventional voices, one could easily think this song was recorded in the 60's.

Willy Mason makes an appearance on this touchingly spare cover of Townes Van Zandt's "No Place to Fall"...

And as a final note, I LOVE the album cover. The typeface and the photo and the simple layout... just so good.

I've mentioned Amelie a few times before (it's my favorite movie), but I just discovered the opening sequence on youtube, and the opening is one of my favorite parts.

In just the first ten minutes, there are so many things I love, and revel in re-experiencing every time I watch the movie, that I could probably write a whole essay just on this small part. I bore people to death when I get them to watch it with me because I keep interrupting and saying, "Oooh, don't you love how ____," and pointing out every little thing I hope they're noticing, and not just noticing, but gleaning as much enjoyment from it as I am.

So here, I will restrain myself, and spare you, by putting all the things I hope you're noticing after the jump, providing you the option of reading it or skipping it. Considerate, no?

In no particular order...

+The narration. I just love third-person narration in a film and the story-telling feeling it provides. Think about these particularly heart-wrenching films-- The Fall, The Notebook, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, The Princess Bride-- they all employ a narrator. Interesting, huh? I love it.

+The extremely literal and highly specific descriptions of the parents via their likes and dislikes. I love this method of description because although the likes and dislikes are not highly personal information, as in, not emotional or secret, they are highly personal in that you could be very close to someone and still not necessarily know these things about them. Doesn't it make you wonder if you could name such things for those closest to you?

+And don't you love when you find out the parents' overlapping beloved activity? It's like you're seeing a Venn diagram of the parents, and they have one overlapping favorite thing, and takes on some small, happy significance.

+The tiny moments of pure, unpolluted childhood joys enacted by Amelie in the opening credits. The feeling of peeling glue of your fingers comes back in an instant, no? Next time you babysit your favorite little kid, you can think of this sequence and remember that you don't necessarily have to come up with a whole elaborate plan for what to do together. They'll be happy just peeling glue off their skin and making paper chains.

+The coexistence of extreme innocence and calculated vindictiveness in Amelie's character revealed through her reaction to her neighbor's trick, and the ability of broken trust to bring out the latter so shortly after the former.

Ok stopping, I'm sure you'll discover many more tiny things to appreciate...

This new "billboard" installation at the US-Candadian border advertises... nothing. Well, nothing but clean air, that is. Making a strong statement through an obvious absence, the sculpture is meant to pay homage to, and promote the value of, something very hard to capture: the beauty of fresh, clean air.

As one of its designers explained:

"Borrowing the effectiveness of billboards to redirect attention away from the landscape... this permanently open aperture between nations works to frame nothing more than a clear view of the changing atmospheric conditions beyond."

Made of a tangle of steel rods, the piece was designed by Lead Pencil Studio, a firm that blends art and architecture, and you'll absolutely NEVER guess who it was commissioned by. The federal government. More info after the jump...

Bruce Weber, a part-time resident of Miami and full-time fashion photographer, shifts his focus in a new project about his neighbors in Little Haiti for his first museum exhibition, "Haiti/Little Haiti," which opens this month at MOCA Miami.

Apparently, the exhibition, which contains photos from 2003-2010, is partly as a reaction to the disproportionately aggressive deportation efforts that have been aimed at Haitian residents of Miami. I love that Bruce is using his status to bring awareness to such an issue!

I cannot believe these are microwave meals. Can. Not. Believe. I saw these and assumed it was one of those really well-designed things you come across online and then the info says "student project" and it turns out it's not actually a real product. Not so here. These are sold in the UK by COOK, and in addition to being so, so beautifully designed, they sound really delicious, and there's a sticker in the top right corner telling you the name of the chef that prepared the meal.

These would be pretty as stationery! So the fact that it's packaging for something generally so commercial-looking, usually using glossy, over-saturated, close-up photos of the steaming meal you are about to buy and big slogans zinged dramatically across the front to grab your attention, these are so refreshingly simple, classic, and photoshop-free.

An interesting article from GOOD Magazine on Brad Pitt's Make It Right organization working to rebuild the Lower Ninth Ward. Here, a few excerpts:

"Their vision is more ambitious than those of the other nonprofit organizations and government agencies that came to town after Katrina. Most were hoping to shelter homeless families; Make It Right wants to model a new paradigm of sustainable low-income homeownership."

"It's a surreal scene: a hyper-modern housing development in the middle of nowhere that answers some of New Orleans's oldest building challenges even as it clashes with the city's traditional patina."

"'People who lost everything, they want their memories to come alive again," says Carol McMichael Reese, an architecture historian. "And so in that way, I think the clients of Make It Right have been very brave, really, because they've sort of embraced the future.'

Last week, redu, a movement aimed at rebuilding America's public school system, sponsored a huge collaborative arts show, called Re:Form School, aimed at raising public awareness about the need to reform our school system.

WK, one of the participating artists, created this awesome installation at a New York City public school playground using photos he took of kids at the school and drawings he collected from them.

Maybe the most "I-want-to-wear-that-right-now" pieces I've ever seen in one collection. Monique Lhuillier just makes the most beautiful dresses I think I've ever seen, right up there with Valentino and Oscar de la Renta... all masters of the feminine. They're not reinventing the wheel, they just make consistently beautiful things that make women look beautiful. Genius.

Working On >> A Wine Country Cottage Inn

I've gotten a few messages from readers asking more about my job, so I thought I'd share a little bit from a current project I'm working on. It's a new development that will be a wine country inn composed of lots of cute little white board and batten cottages, along with a restaurant, gym, spa, and pool.

Above is the inspiration board I put together for the project, which gives a general idea of both the aesthetic we're going for (cottages/old boarding houses/barns), and also the feel for the whole environment-- retro, family-friendly, good clean fun.

Think bingo nights, picnics, shuffleboard, movies played on a screen on the side of the barn, rocking chairs on porches, bike rides around town, etc....

So essentially, what my company does is to make this whole feeling a reality, as expressed through the architecture and interiors, in everything from the furniture to the pool cabanas to the door knobs, as well as all the other little details of the hotel, like signage, key fobs, and menus. So for example instead of your room service dinner arriving on a golf cart, like it would at most cottage hotels, we're going to have dark green tricycles with big baskets that arrive with your food, and lots of other fun little details like that. Ta-da!

Speaking of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (see two posts down), if you haven't seen it, you really must. It's so incredibly beautiful and moving. It was directed by Julian Schnabel, who once said that with his art, he's "aiming for an emotional state, a state that people can literally walk into and be engulfed." This film certainly had that effect on me.

I like that the trailer doesn't give too much away, so I won't either. I think it better allows you to be completely absorbed into the "emotional state" Schnabel describes.

And as a film with a heavy emphasis on story-telling (narration by the main character is a large component), I liked that I was lead into the narrative without any preconceptions. Remember how when you watched the Princess Bride when you were little, you hated when they would break the story and go back to the grandfather and grandson at bedtime, because you were so into the story? This film evoked that same feeling of total immersion into a story.

It also won best director at Cannes, was nominated for four Oscars, and appeared on over twenty top-10 lists of 2007. So if the little heart-strings argument above didn't get you, I hope the critical acclaim will...

PS-- Don't give up if at the beginning you think it's super slow. It picks up.

When I first saw this print, I thought it was a movie poster, like the "unsheets" I've been posting. Doesn't the format, with the line along the bottom and what looks like tiny credits underneath, lead you to think so? And for a French film, the design would be perfectly suitable. It kind of looks like it could be for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, no?

And it turns out it's just a lovely print with a lovely meaning by an artist, and unlike the general genre of "inspirational posters," not cheesy at all. I particularly love the (unsentimental) typeface.

OMFG Co., design firm behind the Ace Hotels' collateral materials, does it again with the new Portland sports bar Spirit of '77. Love the giant sign and scoreboard, and did you notice that the wall behind the bar is a basketball floor?

One reason I find my job (hospitality design) so interesting is that for hospitality interiors (bars, hotels, restaurants), you are combining interior design and branding, creating not just a space, but an entire world, from scratch. The interior design has to be well done, of course, as it would be in a home, but at the same time you are reinforcing a brand message at every turn.

And I don't mean putting the establishment logo everywhere. What I mean is that every single aspect, from the fonts on the signage, to the paper products (menus, in-room binders, door tags), to the food and drinks, to the kinds of glasses and silverware you choose, all have to speak the same language, constantly reminding the visitor what the place is all about.

OMFG Co. does such a great job of this. If you've ever been to an Ace Hotel, you know what I mean. From the second you walk in the door, it's a full on experience that is so specific because every detail supports the experience.

I like... but... also kind of just feels like a mash-up of some of Chuck Close and Vik Muniz's work:

Do you get giddy when you hear the mid-week teasers from Ira on NPR in his endearingly nasal little voice? "This week.... on This American Life..."?

The video quality isn't great, but the content is. I'm always in awe of what a great storyteller Glass is on the show, adding suspense to even seemingly mundane topics, so I loved hearing insight on his method. Hint: he says to throw out the rules you learned in school.

The ability to tell a story well is a really incredible life skill and one that I admire greatly, because despite whether it is part of your job, it is a major boost to your conversational repertoire and is sure to make you more interesting at dinner parties!

In seventh grade, Ms. Hearey, my art teacher, showed our class this piece and immediately and forever changed my understanding of Modern art.

Bird in Space, 1923.

She put up a slide of this sculpture on the first day of class, without telling us the name or giving any introduction, and asked what we thought of it. As twelve and thirteen year-olds with no particular artistic leanings, we stared dumbly and were unable to offer anything of substance. I remember actually thinking the classic non-Modern-art-lovers' comment, "I think I could have done that."

Then she told us the name, and showed us more examples of Brancusi's style of reducing and abstracting ideas to their simplest form-- in this case, a flying bird represented not by beak and wings and feathers, but by a fluid, graceful form encapsulating the essence of a bird in flight-- and it all clicked.

Brancusi (and these two pieces in particular) became a favorite, and Katy Hearey, if you're out there, I think I have you to thank as starting me on a path that would result in my majoring in art history and generally loving art history for life.

No photos were allowed during the show, so that the collection is a surprise when it comes out, but just these photos of the entrance are enough to make me swoon. Not content with merely an "artistic representation" of the layout of the city, they created a geographic and topographic replica using custom-made software to transform an aerial photo in a 3-d bas relief using wood, bronze, and polymer resin.

OK, this is not the kind of blog where I post pictures of my outfits, but this is a little crazy-- just came across Anna dello Russo in this dress that looks uncannily like the dress I wore on New Years, and I just had to share. Short striped sequined dresses with long sleeves were not the most common thing last time I checked... I actually got mine at a thrift store and cut about two feet off the bottom, so it wasn't even something I found in a shop!

Even the shoes! You can't see the shoes I'm wearing so I added a separate pic of those, and they're fairly identical to the ones she's wearing...

I love anything field guide-esque, and I love brown paper with red and white bakers' twine, so I immediately fell hard for these "tying the knot" themed wedding invitations. But the cover of the "guidebook to tying the knot" is only the beginning. There's even more to love inside...

They just nailed every detail. The fonts, the stamps with the date, the retro clip art-like icons on the "be prepared" page, the luggage tag, the trail map, the very "official"-looking, unsentimental layout of the cover, ugh, I'm dying. These aren't just invitations, this is like full-on branding for their wedding. I don't know that I'd ever do something like this for my own wedding, but I am obsessed with how creative and thorough this is!

Designed for and by, not surprisingly, a guy who works for a branding firm Urban Influence -- he is the groom as well as the designer!

Japanese minimalist brand MUJI, whose full name roughly translates to "no-name quality goods," purveyors of well-designed simple products with little packaging and no branding, has entered the pre-fab home market in Japan. I find the development of modern forms of pre-fab homes seriously encouraging for what it could do for green building, affordable housing, etc., so this is pretty cool!

They offer a few different designs, starting at about $200,000. A pretty good deal for a good-looking modern home!

I unabashedly love Keri Russell. I've seen every episode of Felicity (which says a lot, seeing as I'm not a TV person... I think the show actually might've been a subconscious reason I went to NYU (Felicitiy went to "UNY" on the show)), and have watched Waitress almost as many times as I've watched When Harry Met Sally.

She's just so darn charming, she has great hair, and I love that she married a carpenter and lives in Brooklyn with her husband and baby. And then she went and wore this great outfit and I had to put her on the blog.

Tonight, Arianna Huffington will be hosting a virtual town hall with Davis Guggenheim, the director (also directed An Inconvenient Truth) and Joel Klein, the chancellor of NYC schools to discuss about the film and education reform in general, and anyone can participate!

It seems like the PR team behind this film is doing a great job garnering attention for their screenings with the director and things like this virtual town hall, and I'm so glad, it deserves as much publicity as it can possibly get!

So glad to see that Steve Powers (a graffiti artist AND Fulbright scholar) is back with a new project. Called "A Love Letter for Syracuse," it's a project in conjunction with Syracuse University and local organizations intended to use public art as a means to neighborhood revitalization.

Powers, together with these organizations, used painted phrases to turn three train bridges that are physical and metaphorical dividers between two very disparate neighborhoods into points of unity and conversation-starters.

Here, Steve discusses "why" of the font, the words, etc behind this project...

The bridges that cross Fayette and West Streets were hand made in the 1940s from Carnegie Steel and the toil of countless people. They were built for a Syracuse of great industry and remain faithful to the industrial ideals of utility, dependability and (yes) austerity. In the era the bridges were built, sign painting was a viable profession and like many other professions in Syracuse, went away because a machine replaced hands, heart and head.

Once sign painting as a trade became extinct, it became interesting to me as a medium for art. I learned to paint signs as they had been painted for generations, but instead of the commercial concerns of most signage I used the letters and colors to talk about love and life. The font I employ was prized by sign painters because it is clear and versatile, qualities that serve me well when I am talking about complex things like love. Beyond that, my use of the sign painters craft is about the importance of the hands, heart and head being present in the work I make. The work we are calling on to renew the West side must possess the same qualities.

The words we painted were drawn from the neighborhood. The font was already on one side of the w. Fayette Street bridge. (It was painted for Romano Ford in the 60′s and again in the 70′s) The colors we used are present in every industry, the federal safety colors, blue, red, yellow, green, and especially orange. The gloss black is what the bridge was painted when it was first built. The innovations of the color and the content emerge from the history of the black paint. In doing so, these painted bridges represent what I believe is the future of Syracuse; Taking what has value and remaking it for the future, in a way that respects tradition and innovation.

A wonderful little piece of wonderment for your day...

Above, an ad for the new Canon Pixma printer, below, the making of the ad. To create what you see above, they put drops of paint on a membrane over a speaker, and then when they played a sound through the speaker, it made the paint bounce up, and they caught the action at 5,000 frames per second. That's a lot of frames per second.

The result is ultra-clear slow motion video of tiny bits of gelatinous color exploding into the air.

The ad itself is wonderfully captivating, and the making-of film, if it's publicized, will be an interesting combination of the two trends I've been talking about on this blog related to advertising... the short film approach (Chanel, GANT) and the "real people" approach (Tod's by Eliot Erwitt and Cole Haan by the Selby), where the photographer him/herself is known and hyped (not just a tiny credit somewhere), and the subjects are real people who use the product (not actors) and are identified. In this case, it's not exactly the first or the second, but still carries the themes of a well-crafted story and a behind-the-scenes, "we're not a nameless, faceless corporation" tone. Interesting here that they even reveal who the advertising agency behind the project was...

What happens when you give Scorsese only 1 minute to tell a story?

It comes out just like a Scorsese-- a man trying to find himself, flashing camera bulbs and shutter sounds, an opening sequence pulled from another point in the story's timeline, Rolling Stones, etc. The only thing missing is violence, but you wouldn't necessarily want that in a cologne ad. Pretty fantastic little film.

Speaking of short films, have you noticed the trend of fashion houses hiring big name directors to shoot "short films" rather than "commercials" these days? I like it! I'd much rather watch a little short than a traditional ad!

The GANT film wasn't a big name director, but it did definitely have this short film feel. If you missed it, catch it here.

Full on obsessed with Portugal. The Man, despite that obnoxious "." in the middle of their name. (I realize it's hypocritical for me to critique someone else for reappropriating punctuation since I regularly make up my own words and generally feel free to use punctuation as I see fit, but for some reason that period really irks me. I reappropriate punctuation in order to affect a certain reading of the sentence, whereas I feel like they did it just to be "conceptual.")

HOWEVER, I am able to overlook this gaff because their music is SO GOOD. I haven't fallen for a new band, since, well, let's be honest, the last time I uttered that phrase on this blog, which probably wasn't that long ago, but I'm blinded my newfound love for them. Their sound is hard to pin down, but if you can imagine a cross between the Black Keys and a grown-up MGMT, and if you ever loved 311 (I swear there's some faint echoes of 311, it took me forever to figure out who it is, but that's it), and all of this is sounding appealing, you should check them out.

I was immediately won over by their tinges of neo-soul, but they are nothing if not heterogeneous, building an indie-rock sound from influences ranging from classic rock, blues, and gospel to electronica and psych-pop with floating harmonies and John Gourley's vocals being the constants tying it all together. Interestingly, the producer was Paul Kolderie, who has worked with both Radiohead and Pixies, and you can hear his influence in their as well.

So the first two songs are from their new album, The Satanic Satanist (meant to be ironic, don't worry), and I'd recommend starting with that one if you want to pick an album to download. They've got their story a little better figured out by this album, paring down the influences slightly and avoiding self-indulgent guitar solos, and it's more immediately accessible because of it.
